Topeka X-treme

Topeka skate parks are loaded with an extreme group of individuals doing some sick shit. They are a fearless group that attempt big air stunts. If you are part of this unique counterculture you should definitely check out Topeka's skate parks.











I took these photos at Big Rip, located just off 21st on Burlingame .

As a youth I dropped in on a half-pipe on a skateboard. Two thoughts simultaneously crossed my mind after the back of my head hit the ramp (I don't remember them exactly but I'm pretty sure they were "Fuck this Shit," and "Where am I?" I admire the talent and drive of these young men.

Summer Storm Week

The clouds have finally broke and the recent rainy weather has transformed Topeka into a giant water park. Over the past week, senses have been stimulated by the cold rainy nights and hot humid days. There was even the added excitement of tornado sirens.

On Saturday the sun broke through the clouds in the capital city.


The Kansas River is filled from bank to bank.



I came home to what the neighborhood kids are calling Lake Seabrook. I call it my front yard.



On Saturday night the carnival on Topeka Boulevard entertained visitors.


Topeka's nightscape accented with the vivid color of the carnival. For those looking to make some extra money - Sunday night the carnival will be leaving town and they are looking for help to tear down the machines. Those interested should meet at the Ferris Wheel at 9:15 (If there is rain interested individuals should be there at 6:15. It is first come first serve and pays $8.00 per hour).

Rainbow Gangs

No visit to Topeka is complete without a trip down 12th Street. There you will find the sources of Topeka's most entertaining people. These are the famous gangs of Topeka. I could talk a ton of shit, but I will just shut my mouth, show you the sites and let you talk all the shit you want.

Gourmet Cat Food

I have been on a crazy bird kick for a while now. Topeka is a great place to run  into these winged creatures. Here are a few select images of the gourmet cat food that I have found.

Earlier this year at the St. Patrick's Day Parade I noticed this bird enjoying the festivities. 

I caught this guy peeking through my neighbor's window. 

I can't help but wonder what goes through goes through a bird's head - besides bugs, worms and the occasional B-B.

I am on a mission to find the best places to panhandle in Topeka. I'm pretty sure I found the goldmine. At the entrance to Jose Peppers and Wal-Mart on Wanamaker, panhandlers are on every corner.

...another panhandler.

There is obviously a strategy to panhandling in Topeka. Panhandlers have to market themselves to get a strong bottom line. High traffic intersections with a strong message on a billboard that prays on the emotions of people. Just like most American corporations, but without the strong media ad-placement. 

I'm still looking for panhandling hot spots. If you know some, point me in the direction.

At the Historical Society Trails there is a swinging rope bridge and some lady with two chihuahuas that interrogates trail seekers for "security" purposes. I think she is full of shit.
